ASTERISM

2017

THE BOOK ↓

'Asterism' calls attention to facts about space — an exploration of our universe and the objects within it.

noun
      1. ASTRONOMY: a prominent pattern or group of stars that is smaller than a constellation.
      2. a group of three asterisks (⁂) drawing attention to a piece of text.

Asterism is a handmade book accompanied by a fold-out zine that explores the facts and visuals of space through hand-drawn illustrations and paintings on a variety of different papers and folding pages.

Created as a personal project in response to an open brief, the intention for this project was to explore, educate and emphasise space in a contrasting way to which it is usually presented. Rather than dark, black and technical, this open, clean & minimal presentation states facts relating to the different areas of space — from the planets, to moons, stars, the Milky Way galaxy and the rest of the observable universe.

Drawings: Graphite pencil, white gel pen & fineliner on Stonehenge paper Paintings: Gouache on Arches Watercolour Paper Stars: Pin pricks on Japanese ‘Khadi Banana’ paper with vellum overlay

THE ZINE ↓
Creating the book ‘Asterism’ was the main part to the project, but as an additional pieces to introduce the book, I created a zine which I handed out for free at the small exhibition we held at the end of the semester.

The zine is a collection of selected facts across all of the topics covered in the final book, with a poster of one of the graphite drawings on the reverse. It is folded in a non-traditional way so that a small card was fitted inside of it, acting as an envelope, explaining what the book was about.
